For Whose Economy and Culture?

What is the role of an artist, an institution, or a biennial in the global reality of the New Economy? The instrumentalization of life by capital after the last financial crisis has been so severe that an ever increasing number of people are forced to live in extreme conditions.

Jasmina Cibic represents this year’s Slovenian pavilion with the work For Our Economy and Culture where among many formalistic gestures, the image of the endemic cave beetle Anophthalmus Hitleri is multiplied and mounted on the wall.

Should we read this depiction as a critique towards the New Economy? Or are we confronted with the continuation of this politics represented by and mediated through art that is bothered more with uniqueness and purity (a paradigm widely spread in fascist and nationalistic politics) than with the current state of exception?
